Auld Lang Syne – Days Long Ago

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne*? – Robert Burns, 1788

I am not a superhero, consciously I know this, yet somehow I am repeatedly dumbfounded when faced with the stark evidence of this simple fact. Perhaps it is societal expectations or perhaps it is just me or a combination of both. Somehow while I wasn’t paying attention another year has passed and I am desperately trying to catch up. It seems I have lost that “loving feeling” though a serenade by Tom Cruise circa 1986 would likely help a great deal. I am assured by my friends that this disquiet is not an incipient mid-life crisis but simply a side effect of the rigors of hockey season.

92024-shes-lost-that-lovin-feelin-gi-4Z0C

Typically I would chalk it up to a case of the winter blues if I hadn’t read a number of posts by other bloggers recently expressing varying degrees of disenchantment with reading, blogging etc echoing many of my own sentiments. Though the consensus has largely been the intention to read in 2015 for the love of it, and as much as I heartily agree with this edict I haven’t been so mired in indecision bookwise since the debacle that was the conclusion of Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid series. However all is not lost as there is a number of books recently added to my admittedly sizable TBR pile that I hope will rekindle the passion.

little-white-liesLittle White Lies by Katie Dale – The first time Lou meets mysterious Christian, she knows he is The One. But Christian is hiding a terrible secret. Why does he clam up every time Lou asks about his past? Why doesn’t he have any family photos, and why does he dye his blond hair black? When Christian’s house goes up in flames, his tires are slashed, and he flees for his life, Lou insists on going with him. But as Christian’s secret is unveiled in front of the whole world, it seems everything he’s ever told Lou is a lie. Can what the media are saying about him really be true? Should Lou trust him? Or is she in grave danger? And what if their accidental meeting wasn’t an accident at all…?

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins – Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

BrightPlacesAll the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven – When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

The-Pact

The Pact – Karina Halle

It all started with a pinky swear…

Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome; a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He’s also one of Stephanie Robson’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she’s known him.

Beautiful, funny and an ambitious businesswoman (with one hell of an ass), Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he’s known her.

But some relationships can’t be boxed, can’t be classified, can’t be tamed.

Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them are in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty.

It sounds like fun and games but as the years to thirty tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.
Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line.

The pact is about to change everything.

It is somehow fitting that when I have reached this reading crossroads of sorts that I would come across a new offering by a somewhat “old”, at least in terms of my reading for blogging purposes, author. I discovered Karina Halle’s spectacular Experiment in Terror series in 2013. It was that perfect unlikely combination of horror and romance that sparked my interest enough to read first one then another and another and so on in rapid succession. While The Pact is a deviation from her paranormal and darker fiction of the last two years it still possessed that compulsively readable quality all of Halle’s writing seems to have in common and I consumed it in less than 24 hours. Though it is not quite a serenade from Maverick, The Pact was more than entrancing enough to inspire me to revisit my TBR pile to see what in Burn’s famous words other acquaintances I might have forgot in days long ago.

Synopsis

dirty angels karina halleFor Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.

When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.

Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.

As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.

That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.

Unless she ruins him first.

Excerpt:

“You’re a very dirty man.”

“Filthy,” he corrected me. He smacked my ass lightly, causing me to jump. “Oh, that’s just fucking beautiful.”

He did it again and again, not enough to hurt but enough to sting. Each time, he licked the place where his handprint would have been. Then, with one hand he gently pried my ass cheeks open. I couldn’t help but cringe.

“You need to relax,” he whispered. “This won’t hurt. And I’m sure you took a bath this morning, didn’t you?” I murmured yes in response. “Then you’re clean and you have nothing to worry about. As for me, I’d take you anyway I can. It’s all exquisite to me.”

He was right. He was filthy.

“Relax, Luisa,” he said again. “Relax.”

And so I tried.

The first contact from his tongue made me shudder. The sensation was so entirely new to me, but what wasn’t at this point. Yet his mouth, lips, tongue, were all warm and wet and gentle and I found my body immediately relaxing into the steady motion. I pushed aside all thoughts about how impure this was. Purity had done nothing for me, anyway. It was better to be dirty. It was better to take what you could. It was better to embrace your lustful, needful, animalistic side because that was the side that lived.

Dreadful Retrospective – Best of 2013

The Best of 2013…

Wallb

Not all of the following were published in 2013, but here is a sampling of thirteen of the best I read and reviewed this past year.

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton is in a word FUN. When we meet Caroline she has just moved into a lovely sublet in San Francisco and everything seems perfect until the first night. The title really says it all, poor Caroline, who has misplaced her “o”, the “O” for those of us who require further elaboration, is an involuntary auditory spectator to her neighbors sexual antics adding insult to injury considering her “o-less” state.

on-the-island-cover1I absolutely devoured this book, I read it at every opportunity that being said Tracey Garvis GravesOn the Island isn’t for everyone. The relationship that develops between Anna and T.J. is contentious both within and without the book. The question is, what would make a romantic relationship between a woman in her third decade and a much younger man okay? If On the Island was an idealized version of the romance between a teen-aged boy and a woman in her third decade A Much Younger Man by Dianne Highbridge is the real story. If you have trouble choosing just read both. flat-out_love_-_jessica_park

Julie of Jessica Park‘s Flat Out Love has just found out first hand why you should never rent an apartment through Craig’s List. When she arrives in Boston ready to commence her college career instead of the 1-bedroom walk up agreed upon she finds a burrito stand instead. This might not be catastrophic under other circumstances but in a college town in August… This deceptively intricate multi-layered novel is not one to be missed. After you have finished it, NOT BEFORE, read the companion novel Flat Out Matt, a selection of chapters from Flat Out Love from his POV.

Here is a short list of places I am now scared to go, thanks to reading Karina Halle’s Experiment in Terror series: lighthouses, the New Mexican desert, old hotels…wait no, that was because of The Shining but I am sure if I wasn’t already afraid, I would be after reading The Benson. I suppose things could be worse and I could be afraid to go into my own basement as Stephen King is purported to be? Seriously, this series uniquely combines horror and romance something that is sadly very rare, download the first here it’s free! Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror #1)

Ghost-Planet-MM_final-with-blurb_2Elizabeth Cole is dead, she just doesn’t know it yet. How would you react if faced with an exact living breathing sentient replica of a significant, if not beloved person from your past… who also happens to be dead? Ghost Planet combines exquisitely, a poignantly emotional romance and a compelling science fiction story, Sharon Lynn Fisher hit it out of the park with this debut.

In Dear Adam, Ava Zavora‘s Eden receives a random tweet complimenting her review of the most recent novel of one of her favorite author’s. Truly there is no surer way to a blogger’s heart, and so begins a series of exchanges with the mysterious, intellectual Adam, her long lost book twin.

COVER-Isnt-She-LovelyLauren Layne’s Isn’t She Lovely was that perfect combination of irreverent and serious. If this book was a dessert I would have to compare it to key lime pie that perfect blend of sweet without crossing the dreaded line into saccharine but with just enough tang to keep things interesting. I am not always a fan of New Adult literature but I would defy anyone to read Lauren Layne’s take on Pygmalion and not be converted.

RWRealm Walker is a chimera of all the best aspects of the paranormal genre. Kathleen Collins’ has skillfully reinvented the classic paranormal paradigm with the mysterious hard boiled investigator type with just enough femininity as to be a convincing romantic heroine and the autocratic yet emotionally vulnerable vampire who loves her in a dark world full of monsters and the result is a fresh and entertaining read.

MadScientistsDaughter-144dpiEvery once and a while there is that perfect inexplicable union of words that creates that perfect bibliophilic high. Cassandra Rose Clarke‘s The Mad Scientist’s Daughter is for me one of those coveted works. Honestly, how can you miss with “A Tale of Love, Loss and Robots“?

This may sound like an oxymoron but if you are looking for an intelligent “bodice ripper” though I highly doubt The Ideal Gentleman would ever be so crass, look no farther than Sherry Thomas‘ work. All of which are favorites of mine, in particular her latest offering The Luckiest Lady in London.

The Husband's Secret

Last but not least by any means is The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty, cleverly disguised as women’s fiction what I found instead was a terrifyingly real psychological thriller for lack of a better classification, there is none of the typical earmarks of the genre yet it is a deeply disquieting read.

This is just a few of the many stories I read and enjoyed so very much this year and I hope that if you have not read some or all of them that you will read and like them as much as I did.

Happy New Year – Penny Dreadful Books and Reviews

Come Alive (Experiment in Terror #7) – Karina Halle

Does love conquer all? It’s the central theme in Come Alive Karina Halle‘s ninth entry in the Experiment in Terror franchise. Well, all I can say is this ostrich pulled her head out of the sand and it was well worth it.

CA

I know the above statement may not make sense but once you read the rest of the post it should. It was ridiculous to think I could wait until winter for more EiT but unfortunately now I have no choice.

ORIGINAL POST (August 25, 2013) Consider this an interim review because I have not in fact finished Come Alive, the seventh installment of the Experiment in Terror series. I adore this franchise and I am beginning to wonder if Karina Halle is some sort of god, at least of the demi variety. I have raced through each of the eight previous books and loved every minute of it and actually expected to be caught up more than a week ago but I am procrastinating.

The reason, I think, is two fold, one I quite simply am not ready to leave Dex and Perry… okay I will be honest, Dex, I am not ready to leave Dex. I have nothing against Perry and other than her fragile self-esteem, which makes me want to sit down and have a long talk with her about getting a grip and in the event that that fails then I would have no choice but to slap her but I digress. Second, I have a bad feeling, I never watch Gone With the Wind after Rhett and Scarlett marry, well other than the first time of course and I am still scarred from how spectacularly that went wrong and all for ASHLEY for goodness sake! Thus in light of my bad feeling, could be just GWTW flashbacks I am not sure but I have no other choice than to opt for the effective although somewhat cowardly approach of my best ostrich, find sand and insert head firmly at least until Ashes to Ashes comes out this winter or possibly until next May when the ninth and final installment Dust to Dust is released.

It’s one thing to bring the woman you love back into your life. It’s another to try and keep her there. For Dex Foray, convincing Perry Palomino to open herself to their burgeoning relationship has been more challenging than hunting ghosts, battling demons and stalking Sasquatch combined. Add in the fact that the only way they can keep their Experiment in Terror show running is to take on a third partner in the form of the mysterious Maximus Jacobs — all while investigating a sinister voodoo sect in New Orleans — and you’ve got the perfect Southern storm and a recipe for disaster. Luckily, Dex has never been one to back down, even when his life –and heart — are on the line.

New Orleans VooDoo

Following the disastrous loss of the Sasquatch footage the only way Jimmy will allow Dex and Perry to continue shooting Experiment in Terror is with Maximus at the helm. This is not entirely unexpected as his appearance in Portland a few months prior was to convince Perry to come back to Shownet sans Dex. Neither is happy about this situation but to appease Perry Dex agrees to try. Their destination is New Orleans aka Ghost Capital USA, and it is not long before it becomes apparent that ghosts are not the only supernatural thing afoot as there are rumors of the dead walking and connections to a powerful voodoo priestess. When a bar patron dies suddenly in front of Perry then reappears later not quite so dead but not alive either that there may be a link to one of the three of them.

Come Alive is told from Dex’s POV, which may not appeal to some but considering my affection for his character I enjoy it immensely. It is illuminating to understand Dex’s struggle to be the man that he believes Perry needs and you can’t help but hope that he succeeds even when it is apparent that forces greater than themselves may be trying to keep them apart.

Red Fox Experiment in Terror #2 – Karina Halle

Haunted lighthouses are just the beginning…

A New Mexican dusk
A New Mexican dusk (Photo credit: james_michael_hill)

Reading the Experiment in Terror series brings out conflicting impulses in me. I simultaneously want to rewatch old episodes of X-Files and/or Supernatural and retake abnormal psych. Don’t get me wrong I got an A in that class, probably why I find myself psychoanalyzing pretty much every character I read about up to and including Perry and Dex …okay and everyone else I meet too but that isn’t the point.

Ghost-hunters Perry Palomino and Dex Foray trade in the wild coast of Oregon for the unforgiving deserts of New Mexico, hoping to find the creatures responsible for terrorizing a Navajo couple.

Experiment in Terror has been grudgingly approved by Shownet and the onus is on Perry and Dex to make a success of it. Maximus, an old band mate of Dex’s, contact the pair after determining that the unexplained events taking place in Red Fox are beyond his questionable ghost whispering abilities. Perry and Dex have to pose as a married couple to stay with the devoutly religious Navajo couple which challenges Perry’s already conflicted feelings about her partner.

And that was exactly why I didn’t ever want to give a single ounce of myself away to Dex. He lulls me into a false sense of security and then treads all over me. Damn him and his stupid mustache.

Red Fox Book CoversRed Fox is but the second piece in an ever deepening mystery not only of what is causing animals to appear out of nowhere in a locked room, or rocks to pelt the house without known origin, but more so that of the characters of Perry and Dex. Karina Halle‘s sophomore effort proves that the downright creepiness of Darkhouse was not a fluke and has drafted a fascinating, strangely eerie tale which will likely cause her readers to think twice before wandering off into the New Mexican desert without proper supernatural protection.

Darkhouse Experiment in Terror #1 – Karina Halle

Here is a short list of places I am now scared to go, thanks to reading Karina Halle’s Experiment in Terror series: lighthouses, the New Mexican desert, old hotels…wait no, that was because of The Shining but I am sure if I wasn’t already afraid, I would be after reading The Benson. I suppose things could be worse and I could be afraid to go into my own basement as Stephen King is purported to be.

After reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer I realized that I missed the horror novels of my teenaged years. I discovered Darkhouse on my go to site for book discovery Goodreads and in doing so have rediscovered another significant love from my past The X-Files reincarnated in the characters of Declan (Dex) Foray and Perry Palomino. Dare I say that Dex and Perry are in their own way better than *gasp* Mulder and Scully. So much of the romance between The X-Files’ FBI agents took place off screen or was only suggested to the viewer and to a die hard romantic like myself it was just a tease. Despite the obstacles  between them the sexual tension is palpable almost immediately.

“There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twentysomething, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric webcast producer. Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance.

An abandoned lighthouse is the setting of Perry and Dex’s inauspicious first meeting. After Perry posts the footage from this terrifying encounter on her sister’s blog she sets in motion events that will threaten not only her sanity but her life as well.

Darkhouse was an eerie story rather than downright scary, that being said I did find myself putting down my trusty e-reader and turning in for the night more than once when I was alone in the house after an encounter with the ghostly occupant of the lighthouse. Karina Halle has expertly crafted a story with engaging characters that will bring readers back again and again.
